It’s time for a bit of spectral trickery as we enter the world of Ghost Trick!

You know I like to do my funky/groovy songs every now and then. Ghost Trick recently got a remaster, and ever since I’ve kept this one in the back of mind to hit up eventually.

Technically this is an arrangement of the credits theme, Finale: The “Night” Ends, which includes the entire Ghost Trick theme and adds an entire new section. Hence the credits footage in the video.

Hell yeah, this song rules.

Every year for my birthday, I make a completely 100% biased song choice. Doesn’t have to be anything relevant or a request fulfillment, just something for myself. I mean, sometimes I do this any way… but those can come at random, but I’ll always drop one of these on or around my birthday.

I’m a few weeks late this year (moved to a different place around the beginning of the month and had no time), but here it is nonetheless, a song that has become one of my favorite boss battle themes over the last few years: La-Mulana 2’s Reproduction of Power.

This song is outstanding. It has it all. Prolonged intensity but without enough changeups that it always stays fresh, awesome riffs, a crazy Guitar and Synth solo duel, even a callback to the original La-Mulana’s Interstice of the Dimension in the guitar solo (did you catch it?). I didn’t even have to really change anything, I practically just performed it how it was written.

Phenomenal pair of soundtracks within the La-Mulana series. Also, if you’re looking for a cult classic hardcore puzzle solving experience, be sure to check out the series!

Here’s a true millennial VGM metal person classic right here: the Chapter 1 Boss theme, The Battle of Lil’ Slugger, from Super Meat Boy! I’ve seen requests for this song since the early days of GaMetal.

Even though this song isn’t heard for very long in-game, composer extraordinaire Danny Baranowsky did create and ‘extended cut’ which I’ve based this cover on. It adds some new sections and changes up the second guitar solo a bit.

One for the Flash pile!

Yohohoho! It’s time to battle Cortez from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door!

So, I actually had this song planned before the remake, but had to put it off for a little bit to get to those medley songs. Which turned out to be a good thing, because the remake version of this song BANGS. Thus, this arrangement is mostly based on the new version from TTYD remake, but I still included some elements from the original.

It’s a Kalimba by the way. The instrument at 0:52 (though there are a few other things I have layered with it). 🙂

Last but not least, wrapping up our first Medley Song Madness event is Someday from The World Ends With You, featuring the amazing Lacey Johnson on vocals!

This was the other extra song I confirmed for the medley song lineup along with Captain Falcon. It too was outvoted in the public vote (by Showtime!) for the DS Medley category, but placed #1 in the Patreon vote.

When this song was randomly selected for DS Medley, I threw Lacey a quick message because I felt she’d be a good fit for it. I still knew that’d be the case for a full version, so I reached back out when this won the Patreon vote and we got crackin’ on the full version for you all.

We wanted to give this song a thrash/pop-punk spin and I think that turned out exactly how we envisioned it!

Fun fact: TWEWY was one of the most requested “new to GaMetal series” from the 2023 GaMetal Song Ballot… so we can consider this a song for those voters as well. 🙂

Forever he will be MY hero! What about you?

It’s in my nature to be both overzealous and eager to please the GaMetal community as much as I can, so I pre-confirmed two additional songs for our first Medley Song Madness event, starting with Captain Falcon’s Theme from F-Zero GX/AX.

As mentioned in previous posts, two forms were made available for the event for people to submit their most wanted songs from past GaMetal medleys for full remake contention, a public form and a Patreon form.

For the GameCube Medley category, the public overwhelmingly voted for the Super Smash Bros. Melee Opening theme. Interestingly, the SSBM Opening theme performed fairly average in Patreon voting, where Captain Falcon managed to snag the top spot instead.

The original sounds straight up like a Christian rock song. You could easily play this in any youth church group and no one but the most astute F-Zero fans would be suspect. I attempted to heavy up this arrangement a bit, while still keeping the soul of the original.

As seen in the video, I’m joined by the one and only Samurai Goroh on vocals, with additional backup from Black Shadow. It turns out they really don’t hate Captain Falcon and rather look up to him. I always knew Goroh hated on Falcon a little too hard…

Huehuehue….

I mentioned back in the Death Match post that there were 2 forms for our Medley Song Madness event this year: a public one that was posted here and another Patreon exclusive form that had 2 extra categories for NES Medley(s) and all other medleys combined (ie. Genesis, Game Boy, GaMedley, etc). Death Match won the NES Medley vote, and Stardust Speedway (Bad Future JP) won the other/misc medley vote.

This arrangement combines elements from several versions of Stardust Speedway Bad Future JP, namely the original (CD), Mania, and Generations.

For those wondering why I chose not to include any nods to the US version of Stardust Speedway Bad Future, it’s because I don’t like it. Nah I’m just kidding, the two songs just sound so completely different to me that I’d rather an arrangement focus on their particular version. Perhaps someday, we’ll visit the US version of Stardust Speedway Bad Future. 🙂

And here’s the most voted song for a full remix from the public vote for the GBA Medley category: Battle! Frontier Brain from Pokémon Emerald!

I almost didn’t include a GBA Medley category, but since it did surprisingly well in one of the polls I posted on the YouTube community page asking about medleys, I decided to throw it in last minute.

I actually did this full song in that medley, which made this a fairly easy one to put back together. To help spruce it up a bit, I threw in a key change for the second loop, because who doesn’t like a good ol’ fashioned key change, right? 🙂

SHOWTIME!

This one was most voted song from the public vote for the DS Medley category in this year’s Medley Song Madness event.

When I was putting that medley together, I knew I wanted to have an M&L song in there, and was deciding between this one and Bowser’s battle theme from M&L: Partners in Time. I decided to go with this one because it’s tempo fit in an area of the medley that I needed a spot to fill a bit more than the other.

I completely recreated the “SHOWTIME” sample from the intro just incase we ever get lucky and can get this licensed for streaming some day. I mean…. Puppet Bowser redid it for us. Yeah it was him.

For the Medley Song Madness event, the GaMetal Patreon community (come join us, super awesome) was given a couple of extra options to vote for: a song from any of the NES medleys, and a song from any of the other medleys that weren’t an option this year (Game Boy, Genesis, etc).

The most voted song from the NES Medley category was none other than this one, Death Match from Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II.

I based this arrangement mostly on the Megami Tensei I & II Fusion Disc version, which adds a few new things, but brought the key back down to the original.

For our Medley Song Madness event, there were two voting forms: a public one that was posted on YouTube, and a second one that was posted on Patreon.

While the top 3 songs or so for each medley category was generally the same with a few exceptions here and there, one song, and only one song, placed #1 in it’s category on both the public and Patreon forms: Dracula’s Castle from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

I made this arrangement a hybrid of the original and Judgment versions. It’s as if those two versions had a child and named it Eltsac S’alucard.

The second song for our special Medley Song Madness event sees the return of Donkey Kong Country 2’s Snakey Chantey, which was featured in the recent SNES Medley 2! This song was the most voted SNES Medley 2 song from the Patreon version of the voting form.

I don’t have too much to note on this arrangement, it’s a rather short song originally (and a lot of it comes from Gangplank Galleon), so I just did my best to jam out. 🙂

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS……MELEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

It’s May Madness season! This year, rather than remaking several past full GaMetal arrangements, I’ve shifted the focus entirely on songs that have previously appeared in a GaMetal medley. I created a form for both the YouTube and Patreon communities to fill out, asking which medley songs they’d most like to see a full remix.

Opening from Super Smash Bros. Melee was the most requested from the GameCube Medley from the public voting form. This wasn’t the result I was expecting, but hey, I love Smash, so I’m game!

I couldn’t really figure out a way to “extend” the opening theme that didn’t feel weird. My original intent was to just make this a short remix and only do the opening theme as it was originally written, but it just felt way too short to me. So I had the sudden idea to also throw in Menu 2, which itself is an arrangement of both the Opening theme and Menu 1 theme. I had already done Menu 1 a long time ago, so I feel having Menu 2 served as a great addition.

Hide your rhythms ’cause Phantom R is coming to steal them!

…that’s what he does right? It’s what I always assumed. I only ever played the demo, but I did rather enjoy the songs. I’ve always been partial to this one and Louvre Musuem Invasion.

I threw in a small acknowledgement to Escaping the Courtyard Garden, which in itself is a different arrangement of Phantom R’s theme. Did you catch it?

Kraid’s Lair

I can no longer joke about doing other Metroid songs that aren’t Kraid’s Lair.

Recently, I held a few polls on the YouTube channel centered around medleys. I was gauging interest in future medley sequels and possibly new console medleys. In one of those polls, a new NES Medley was an option among a few others (SNES 3, Game Boy 2, Genesis 2), and it only ended up with 5% of the vote.

Which makes sense, considering we’ve had 10 of those medleys. But just to throw the NES one more bone, we held an NES themed request battle on the GaMetal Discord. The discorders were able to submit their most wanted NES songs in an initial qualifying round, and a mini-tournament was set up with the top 4 songs. The top 4 (from first to fourth) was Title Theme (Solstice), Dr. Wily’s Castle (Mega Man 2), The Strongest Foe (Ys III), and lastly, Kraid’s Lair.

Kraid’s Lair was also a part of the first ever Discord Request Battle many years ago, where it lost to Ridley’s Theme. Since then I’ve had a bit of a running joke with the community about doing Kraid’s Lair eventually, but then ending up having other Metroid songs come before it instead (unintentionally, I swear!).

Well, despite being the underdog in the request battle with the #4 overall vote in the qualifier round, Kraid managed to secure a victory in the end and finally get the full remix treatment.

I based this arrangement mostly on the Super Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid: Zero Mission versions. The SSBM one has always been a favorite of mine, and I’m also fond of the new elements that were added to the Zero Mission arrangement that, as far as I know, haven’t been brought back in an official capacity of this writing.

I also added a hint of SSBU Kraid’s Lair to the mix. That version is incredible, but I didn’t really want to just make a sound-alike version, I wanted something a bit more unique.

Birds disguised as robots… in disguise!

This was a random Patreon request. We heard it on a listening stream one day and thought it was pretty awesome. It ended up getting selected to go on the to-do list not long after. It could’ve been the April Fools special for the year, but since the Patreon community was already aware of it, that would’ve ruined the whole surprise aspect, plus I was already leaning on the LWP:TA Boss Battle in mind for a while. So it ended up being second in the month instead.

This track is really a medley of songs from the ABT soundtrack, so there wasn’t much I did in far as additions. It’s a fairly straight cover here, and mostly a practice for myself in recreating cool synth sounds.

Fun fact! The soundtrack for Angry Birds Transformers was composed by Vince DiCola and Kenny Meriedith, who both worked on past Transformers scores.

TIME BOMB SET

GET OUT FAST

Gaming’s original Escape theme!

In an effort to be funny and not do Kraid’s Lair again, I bring to you this arrangement of Metroid’s Escape theme. Most importantly, I made it a point to include the lost section that can only be found in the US release of Metroid.

No one knows why future official arrangements of this lost section have been dropped, but if I had to wager a guess, it either: 1. didn’t sound anxeity-inducing enough (it has a bit more of an uplifting heroic feel), or 2. it sounded too much like Kid Icarus music (which would make sense as Hirokazu Tanaka composed for both games). There are some parts in the counter melody of that section that sound very similar to KI’s title theme, after all.

But that’s just a theory.

A GaMetal theory!

Battle to the Death (Guitar Hero Boss Battle Arrangement)

Five years ago, we released a pack of charts for Clone Hero called the GaMetal Power Pack.

I’ve been getting emails and the occasional questioning comment over the years asking if we’d ever make a second one… and so we did just that! This new pack includes over 70 charts created by pro charter Miscellany, as well this special new track.

The concept to make a new “Boss Battle” track was the brainchild of Jason Paradise, who brought it up in a discussion we had several years ago, as early as the creation of the first pack back in 2019. I wasn’t able to get around to it then, but figured I could throw something together if and when we got around to making another pack.

At first, I was going put together an arrangement with some of my more popular solos from older GaMetal songs, but what I ended up with sounded like a miniature version of the solo medley from the first pack, so I tossed that idea and decided to do something else: a bunch of soloing over one of my favorite game songs, Fierce Battle (which has now officially been renamed to “Battle to the Death” which I must admit is awesome) from Final Fantasy VI.

Originally this was only going to be the musical portion (the first 2:20), but this was taken a huge step further when the pack’s charter, Miscellany, suggested I add a guitar-only “sudden death” section to go all the way with the GH3 Boss Battle influence.

Thus, “Battle to the Death” was born! I specifically wrote all of the guitar work in this song to be incredibly difficult for Guitar Hero-likes to challenge the craziest of 5 fret rhythm game players, so there’s a whole lot of speed shred and Guitar Hero-specific trickery throughout this entire arrangement.

GaMetal Power Pack 2 is available to download (free of course) over here at CustomSongsCentral, enjoy!

Quick note: there are two different versions of the charts for this song, a “true boss battle” version (seen in this video), and a single-player version with both leads combined (the toughest version).

*I know that pure guitar shred is not for everyone, so for the streaming releases, I’ve provided three different tracks: the “full version” (which is what is heard in the video), and a 2 track split with the musical portion (first 2:20) on one track and the Guitar-only sudden death section on another!
