It’s time to close out 2018 with one last song… enter The Darkest Lord from Miitopia!
This was just one of several options I could’ve gone with for the 2018 finale, but I definitely don’t regret choosing it. It’s an amazing song! I whittled it down to the most popular requests (both from comment requests and an early look at the 2019 Song Ballot, where it was in the top 3 most requested), and also made my decision based on how much time I had to work with. I would’ve hated to slate an extremely difficult, complex song as the finale and not have enough time to get it done before the year ended. This song was sort of a middle ground in the difficulty department: I had a couple of other easier songs among my choices, as well as a few really tough ones that I’ll be saving for later.
Like I said, I definitely don’t regret choosing this song to end the year. It really has it all. The few times I listened to it before I considered it seriously, I listened to about a minute or so and thought ‘yeah this is pretty cool’. I wasn’t aware that this song is originally almost 4 minutes long and has SEVERAL different sections. It constantly changes up but it all works together so well.
Usually when I encounter a song with a million different sections like this one, I don’t change around too much, because there is already plenty to work with. The biggest changes I made were changing some of the synth parts to lead guitar (though this arrangement is still fairly synth heavy), and extending the last guitar solo at around the 3:22 mark. It was originally like.. 2 measures, which was the only part of the original that made me feel like it left me hangin’.
Oh and also, I made the choir in the intro say ‘Miitopia, Miitopia’. Listen carefully!
I decided against adding in other Dark Lord themes (such as the second phase of the fight) because, for one, there is already a TON going on in the first phase theme, and two, they sound… really different from phase one. Not that this has ever stopped me before, but I really felt this particular song stands far better on it’s own. Perhaps I’ll get around to more Miitopia stuff in the future.
This song was a blast to cover, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. See you in 2019! 🙂
