Meridian Dance is back!
Like our previous remake, Count Cannoli, this is another song I first covered in 2014. I often forget that I ever did it before, which is sad because I really love this song.
So this time I’m going to try to make it more memorable! When I listen to my old version, there are a lot of things I that I did that I don’t like now, and things that I left out before for whatever reason. So there’s quite a few changes in this version compared to the old 2014 remix. A lot of the changes I made make this version truer to the original.
For starters, the intro section has been largely revamped, mostly in the rhythm department. When the main melody comes in at 0:16, I went up an octave on the first half compared to how I played it before. I didn’t really like the sound of the lower octave.
There’s a little fast descending arpeggio thing at around 0:44-:47 that I previously did on guitar (or well, tried to do), that I changed back to synth here. It sounds cooler, in my opinion.
I also threw in some fast strings for the intro part and the fast part (I call it the ‘hell part’ because it’s hell to play) at 00:47-00:58. I also reverted the drum fill after that fast part back to 1/4 instead of the full 4/4 drum fill I did before.
I shortened the acoustic section back to the length of the original. I re-extended it again later in the song. The extension I had in 2014 just felt.. unnecessary.
At first, I didn’t really like the guitar solo I did before, but it grew on me. I changed a few notes around to make it fit a little better, but nothing too drastic.
The last major change is the near-final section that starts around 3:04. Previously I played the piccolo part on lead twice, this time I played what’s originally the string melody one time through, and followed it with the piccolo melody. There’s also a lot of changes to the rhythm section here.
The one thing that I definitely did NOT change: that awesome slap bass line. It’s always been, to me anyway, the defining feature of Meridian Dance so I made sure it has a presence throughout most of the song.
I feel like this one flows much than the old 2014 remix, but if you feel like the old one is better, guess what? It’s still there, so you can still listen to it! Isn’t that cool? 😀
